Traditional Chinese New Year Food and their Superstitions

Since Chinese New Year is coming soon,my family members are busy here and there.My mum busy in preparing the food and doing the houseworks.And we decorate the house and so on.On New Year's Day,the Chinese family will eat a vegetarian dish called Jai.Although the various ingredients in Jai are root vegetables or fibrous vegetables,but many people attribute various superstitious aspects of them.


Lotus Seed


People believe that it's signify having many male offspring.

Ginkgo Nuts

Ginkgo nuts name as 白果 (bai gua) in Chinese.My mum will cook it every year with tong sui.Ginkgo nuts is good for health.It helps to relief asthma and long congestion.It also regulate blood flow and promote general longevity.This year,my bff came to my house and help me up.Thanks to him too.Well,ginkgo nuts represents silver ingots.So,when CNY,many people will eat it represent silver will come to you.=)

Black Moss Seaweed

Black moss seaweed or Black hair seaweed is an algae and is eaten on Chinese New Year.Its Chinese name ''fa tsai'' (hair vegetable) which means prosperity,as in ''gong xi fa tsai'' and ''gong hei fa choy'' in cantonese,which is a greeting exchanged during chinese new year which means good luck and prosperity.It is a homonym for exceeding in wealth.

Dried Bean Curd

Bean curd sticks (known as “Teik Gah Kee” in Hokkien, or “Foo Chuk”in Cantonese) is eaten by people when Chinese new Year also.It is another homonym for fulfillment of wealth and happiness.


Bamboo Shoots


Bamboo shoots is low in fat and calories.It is a good source of fiber which helps keep a check on cholesterol levels and chronic constipation. It is a good source of potassium, it can aid in maintaining normal blood pressure and a steady heart beat.When CNY,people like to eat it too because it is a term which sounds like "wishing that everything would be well".

Fresh Bean Curd


Bean curd is eaten hot or cold,alone or in combination.When CNY,people eat it because it is not included as it is white and unlucky for CNY as the color signifies death and misfortune.
